Evaluation - Question 4

4. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I have learned so many skills during the time my coursework, not just how to make a music video but as well as the idea of marketing and also working with different people.

I learnt a lot about teamwork, this is because at the begining I didnt know a few people in my group but I have managed to put my differences aside and work with them as a team in order to complete a good coursework. I have also learnt how to edit a music video as well as how to lip sync. Furthernore, I found the tutorial of how to use Photohop was very useful as I was able to make my digipak and advert.

Overall, I am very happy with how my music video turned out and have received a great amount of positive feedbacks from it. I am glad that I have chosen to study media at A-Level as I have learnt so many things that includes teamwork and as well as using different software to create a successful coursework.

Evaluation - Question 3

3. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages

  • In the process of editing, I used Final Cut Pro to edit the video as well as the lip syncing.
  • For the digipak and advert, I used Photoshop
  • Also, blogger itself to post out blogs of keeping up to date what we are doing.

Evaluation - Question 2

2. How effective is the combination of your main product (video) and ancillary texts (digipak and advertisement)

In the process of making my digipak and advert, I have to think carefully about what to put in there so that the audience can see a link with the video.
Firstly, as you can see, my front cover for the digipak is a picture of my artist wearing the same clothes as he wore in the music video and it is also a similar screen shot to a scene in the video. Secondly, for my back cover, I stuck to the theme of time and layout the track listings inside a circle shape that emphasises the clock. Thirdly, for my inside covers, I used the same image of my front cover for my CD image because I wanted to keep it simple by not using too many images.
As for my advert, I decided to do a review of my artist's abum and again I did not want to make things complicated so I used my front cover of my digipak. Furhtermore, as you can see I used the same font to create the release date and simple italic font for the reviews.

Evaluation - Question 1

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

There were many videos that I was influenced by when making of my video. I was inspired by artists such as Scorcher's It's My Time video and Nick Jonas' Who I Am video. I was also influenced by the running scene from the Rocky Balboa movie.

Scorcher - It's My Time

I was influenced by many things in Scorcher's video. Firstly, the audience can hear that the chorus was sang by a crowd so we had our classmates and friends in the chorus. On the other hand, Scorcher had a group of children singing it. Secondly, in the Scorcher's video, one of the sub-storyline was a boxer training. He was doing push ups preparing for his upcoming fight. In my video, I had a runner doing push ups preparing for his run. Thirdly, I  thought that the judging scene in the Scorcher's video was also important and effective as it shows the character have succeeded. Below are images directly from my video comparing to Scorcher's video.

Nick Jonas - Who I Am

I was inspired by Nick Jonas video because he used a clipboard in the chorus. I thought that this is very useful and effective way to get across the chorus. I also believe that the audience will like it because it is different and usually you wouldn't see anything like this in a grime genre video.

Rocky Balboa (Not Original Running Scene)

I was very influenced by the Rocky's running scene due to the way it was shot and the types of shots were used. Because of this, in my video I had various similar shots to Rocky's scene. Also, in Rocky's video, he raised his arms in the air and this indicates that he is ready for his fight. Furthermore, in my video I used an establish shot to show the mise-en-scene as it emphasise the urban city of where the artist is coming from.

Photos for Digipak (planning)

Below are some of the pictures that I might use for my digipak and advertisement

Overview of 'Do's & Don't'

We were given a sheet that explained to us what we should and should not do. Below are an overview of Do's and Don't

DO'S

  • Use a clear font
  • Use appropriate sizes for images and font
  • Use clear photos that are in focus
  • Use photos that are an appropriate shape for the page
  • Make sure the font is clear from a distance
  • Follow the conventions of the 3 colour rule and use colour that is appropriate for:
    • Images
    • Font
    • Background
  • Use appropriate industry logos and conventions, properly positioned:
    • Barcode
    • Date
    • Copyright
    • Titles
    • Artist Name

DON"T

  • Stretch the images, this will make them out of focus
  • Use layer styles
  • Use unnecessary effects, they must suit the genre
  • Place text across the artists face
  • You dont need to have a photo on every panel

Short-list of fonts, colours, layout and design ideas (planning)

Digipak

Throughout my digipak and advert, I will be using the same font. This is because, we was advised to keep it simple and by not having many different fonts the audience will not be confuse by it. Otherwise, they will think that there are two different artist.

List of fonts:

Colour:

The main colour I am going to use for my digipak and advert is blue, red and black.  The main reason being is that in my video, the artist is wearing black trouser and blue t-shirt. Also, the title of the album is 'Race Against Time' and I did not want to use the same colour for the artist's name and album therefore iI chose red as it goes perfectly well with blue.

Layout:

From the beginning, I was influenced by Scorcher work I researched and look at his mix tape cover and it gave me a few ideas how mine is going to be.

I am going to use the clock in one of the panel for my digipak. This is because I want to have the same theme as it will not confuse the audience and because it is about 'time'. As for the layout of where to put the artist name and title of album, I was also inspired by Scorcher's mixtapes covers. As you can see, the artist name and album cover is in bold and stands out from the background image.

Artist Name: Jason Murdock, stage name P-Major

Album Name: Race Against Time

Track listings:

1. Race Against Time
2. It's My Time
3. Image
4. 100%
5. Big Man Ting
6. Haters
7. Doing Me
8. Moving
9. Success
10. Racism

Number of Panels:

I have decided that I am going to make a four panels digipak. This is because, P-Major is an upcoming artist and you don't want to make things too complicated. Furthermore, his genre is grime and other grime artists such as Scorcher, Skepta and Wiley have used four-panels digipak for their mixtapes and albums.

Contents of each panels:
  • Front Cover - Artist name, Album title and Image of the artist.
  • Back Cover - Track listings, Record Label, Barcode, Artist's Website, Copy Right information.
  • Inside Left Cover - Image of artist, thank you's.
  • Inside Right Cover - Background image, CD (including Artist and Album's Name on it)

Advert

  • I will be using the same font, colour and image from my digipak to make my advert.
  • It will include reviews from tabloid newspaper and magazine.
  • Release Date.

Analysing one sequence from the Rough Cut

For this task, I am going to analyse the second chorus of the song which is from 1:20 to 1:45. As you can see from 1:21 to 1:24, the It's My Time sign was edited slower compared to the song so we need to speed up that scene. Also, to add more cuts so it would be edited to the beats.

Another sequence that can be improved is the last 40 seconds of the song. This sequence need to be re-edit as it doesn't make sense because as an audience, we see the artist dancing around and there wasn't enough cutting. Therefore, we need to add more different types of shots and more cutting so it would make sense and be polished properly.

Feedback from rough cut video (production)

Feedback

What was good about it:
  • Lots of detail shots.
  • Appropriate match cuts.
  • Good use of location and mise-en-scene.
  • Change of costumes.
  • It was energetic and catchy.
  • The chorus was very well edited and also fun to watch.

What need to be improved:
  • The 'it's my time' sign was edited slower compared to the song itself.
  • Some of the shots were out of focus.
  • More attention to lip syncing.
  • Need to improve the editing by adding more cuts according to the beats of the song.

This is what our classmates opinions of the rough cut of the video:

"It was different in a good way"

"Very entertaining to watch as it was very energetic"

"The whole mise-en-scene was really good and the uses of locations, also the changes of costumes "

"The chorus is very catchy so it need to be edit more for it to look good"

"The last few seconds of the song doesn't looked well edited so it need to be improved"

Making Shirts

This lesson we made our props, the "It's My Time" T-Shirt. However, we did not use the t-shirt in the music video, as the printing on the t-shirt didn't come out as neat and clean as we had hoped.
