Digipak analysis (research)

First of all i'd like to say with a genre such as grime you wouldn't normally get a digipak. However in some cases you would might get a booklet saying the dates of there next show and where it will be held.
  WILEY

This  is the front cover from wiley's album 'Play times over'. The Font alone can tell us alot about this arist , it's sharp, playfull and experimental but serious just like wiley. Addtionally the title 'play times over' could tell you alot about the artist has well this could tell us that he's growing up and he's more serious now. Even though this is set in a park this is a very urban image, this is down to what the artist is wearing which is an all black matching tracksuit with air force 1 trainers. In addition by having the play ground in all black adds to this. The connotations we have with Black are lifeless, dangers and mystery which are all present in this image, this matches the genre because grime lyrisist rap about real life issues like guns, knifes(general violence) and poverty which can be quite depressing depending on the artist's flow . Also the black playground matches the title 'play times over' because it's colourless which has sucked the fun out of the playground, which is a definitely contrast to what normal playgrounds are which are colourful and attractive. (Compare with picture below)

On the contriary this is a perfect example of how grime doesn't take itself too seriously, So the front cover could be taken in two different ways because the Grime listeners will take the all black with being cool and trendy but the Non listener will represent this with being dangerous. To add even more playfullness to the cover the Artist name and album title was was stuck at the top of the case. "The designers wanted to avoid imposing any text on the photos, so all additional text was on a sticker on top of the cases". Furthmore the artist is on the left hand side of the image this again matches the genre because on grime albums the artist is either in the middle or the left hand side of the the cover.

Even the Disc stuck with the colour scheme which is clear black. The disc is simple has copy right information on it, the artist name and album title. This shows that even though he's a playful person when it comes to the actually music the proof is there, so it's up to you whether you like it or not.
Back cover:
They stuck with the serious, playful theme by having the tracklist black board. They contrast it with white writing. The conntations of white are pure and innocent, so this could represent that the artist is pure and innocent and the black could represent the place he environment he lives in. Big Dada is the record lable which is a grime label so this matches the genre. This is very urban because it's done in a graohical way

Overall the Album cover is playful and serious at the same time it sucked with theme of black,  however it challenge the conventionally grime CD cover in away because they are not normally in a park, however this artist is known for challenging everything because he isn't normally in his video's. Link below shows this.

Wiley has always been this way he doesn't normally appear in alot of video's and if you get him to appear you must be a very lucky person.

           SKEPTA
This album cover is ver conventional with the composition of the artist and album title. However by having his name and album title in a licence plate kind of look shows that this artist as well as Wiley doesn't take it too seriously. This is balanced out by the font which is serious and BLACK. The artist is urbanly dressed by wearing a BLACK wooly hat and bomber jacket. The fact that the artist is present in Westwood studio tells us that even when he's making his album cover he's still in the studio making music and getting himself known. The colours on this cover are quite natural and primary colours which tells the listener that he's speaking about reality because you can clearly see where he is and the cover is not filled with effects and shiny things.

As you can see for the disc they just suck the same picture as the from cover on. This again shows that is it all about the music and the fancy decoration does not matter.
The back cover additionally stuck with the same picture as the front however it is fading into the background. The font is the same. The tracklist is on the left hand side of the image all white which again represents purity which contrast with the background which is quite dark. The record label is 'BOYBETTERKNOW' this is a grime label so he stucked with the convention. Even the font on the the label is playful but serious. There's a parental advisory which tells the audience there will be bad languages in his music which is steriotypical for grime artist.

Overall unlike Wiley, Skepta has kept the concept of what a grime album should look like, however he's just as playful with the fonts and design of their album covers. Skepta is also known for keeping it real with his lyrics and videos,  however he tends to challenge the normally conventions as you can see below.

On the other hand he does not normally does these kinda of videos, he normal does ganstery videos with money and gangs

GHETTS

If you havent pick up on by now grime albums are playful and serious at the same time. This album cover completely matches the album title which is 'Calm before the storm' This is because the background is BLACK and it has lot cloudy patterns in the background looks like what you'd see on a weather forecast. However the artist also matches the title because he look's like he's the one causes the "STORM" because of composition , he's in the middle so it tells us it's all about him. His hands are on his head which is give the impression that he got some x-men like powers. To add to this if you look at the left side of his shades you can see lightening. This cover is very cool, he's fading into the background but he's still quitw visible. The font is a blue white-ish colour similar to the clouds of when a storm is coming. The font on this is very playful and the seperation of the artist name matches the album title because it's coming apart. This matches the genre because of the font style and the whole cool black effect.

Again on the disc is very simple with layout, it look the quality of having a picture on the disc like skepta and layed on his name and title like wiley did at the of the disc. The difference from the other is that this album is filled with effects and more playfulness then the others.

As you can see this also stuck with the one theme storm effect. By having the tracklist at the right hand side of the image this goes against the traditionally grime tracklist but this again matches the title name because the represents to me that the storm has pushed ever thing out of place, to add to this the barcode is normally seen at the left  bottom hand corner but its on the right at a 90 degree angel. The record label is 360 records which is a indie label this is going against the conventional grime label.

Overal Ghetts album also stuck with storm theme throughout his album design which is very convention however it goes against the normal natural scenery of grime album covers. Ghetts is seem as someone as someone to sometimes drift away from the typically grime convention which is shown in the link below.

However he does normally stick with the genre which is hoodies and gangs which is shown in the link below:
